Two seats on the Macon County R-I Board of Education will be on the April 6, 2027, ballot, and candidate filing opens Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Both seats carry three-year terms running from April 2027 to April 2030, according to the filing notice the district posted on its Board Elections page this week. The Chronicle reported the two open seats in October, from a notice in the board's Oct. 21 meeting packet.
Filing runs through Tuesday, Jan. 5. Candidates may file from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 15, 16, and 17 and on Jan. 4. The district office is closed for winter break from Dec. 18 through Jan. 1, and no filings will be taken then. Jan. 5 is the final filing day, and candidates should confirm that day's hours with the district office at 660-395-6164.
The district will not accept filings on days it closes for bad weather, emergencies, or holidays, except on the first and last days of filing, unless severe weather makes travel unsafe, the notice said. Names go on the ballot in the order candidates file.
Candidates must file a Declaration of Candidacy in person with Board Secretary Selinda Thomsen at the district administration office, 902 N. Missouri St., third floor, in Macon. Candidates must also complete Missouri Department of Revenue Form 5120 and file a personal financial disclosure with the Missouri Ethics Commission by Jan. 17, 2027.
Under state law cited in the notice, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen, at least 24 years old, a resident taxpayer of the district, and a resident of the district and Missouri for at least one year before the election. Candidates cannot be behind on state income, personal property, municipal, or residence property taxes, and cannot have pleaded guilty to or been found guilty of a felony. People registered or required to register as sex offenders are not eligible, nor are people convicted of first- or second-degree assault or harassment committed on school district grounds. Candidates who ran before must have filed all required campaign disclosure reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
Board members elected must complete 18.5 hours of training within a year of election and a one-hour refresher each year after, the notice said.
The district's notice in the Oct. 21 board packet lists Jan. 26 for ballot certification and March 10 as the voter registration deadline for the April election.
The notice and qualifications are posted at macon.k12.mo.us under Board of Education, Board Elections.
