Macon R-1 board splits on track coach, secretary hires in Oct. 21 closed session

The Macon R-1 Board of Education split on two hires in closed session Oct. 21, approving Brad Burkhardt as high school head track coach 6-1 and Natalie Moore as high school secretary 5-2, according to draft minutes the district posted Oct. 27.

Board member Bruce Weimer cast the lone no vote on Burkhardt, hired for the 2026-2027 season. Board members Lydia McClellan and Millicent Dawdy voted no on Moore, hired for the 2026-2027 school year, the minutes say.

The minutes are a draft until the board approves them.

Every other recorded vote was 7-0. The board approved:

  • Clint Coffey as middle school assistant boys basketball coach for the 2026-2027 season.
  • Dixee Lacen, Adam Wood, and Shayla Coffey as high school assistant track coaches for the 2026-2027 season, each on a separate vote.
  • Rhonda Maxwell as a special education paraprofessional for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • The monthly substitute teacher list.

The board also accepted two resignations from Abbie Myers, from a part-time Parents as Teachers position and as MACTEC aide, both effective Nov. 3, 2026, on 7-0 votes.

President Stacy Quinn called the closed session to order at 5:02 p.m. in the district board room, 902 N. Missouri St. Members present were Nick Dille, Greg Bruno, Donny Wyatt, Quinn, McClellan, and Weimer, with Dawdy joining by video conference. Superintendent Bryan Thomsen also attended.

The board voted 7-0 to close the session under Sections 610.021(1), (3), (6), and (13) of Missouri law, which cover legal actions and attorney communications, hiring and personnel actions, student records, and personnel records.

The minutes record a 7-0 motion to reconvene in closed session at the conclusion of the open session at 7:18 p.m. The personnel votes follow that motion in the document.

Several sections of the minutes are blacked out, each labeled as closed under the same four sections of state law.

The Chronicle reported Oct. 21 that the board went into closed session after its open meeting with no action announced. That open session included the board’s vote to continue residency checks on Sunshine law requests.

The board next meets Nov. 18.

Notes

  • Prior coverage: stories/2026-10-21-r1-meeting-residency-vote.md (open session; "closed session at 7:10 p.m… No action was announced") and stories/2026-10-21-r1-finances-cost-savings.md (agenda, closed-session statute citations). Earlier closed-session minutes story was Sept. 16 meeting (stories/2026-09-23-macon-ri-closed-sept16-personnel.md), a different meeting. None reported these votes.
  • Time gap: our Oct. 21 story says closed session began 7:10 p.m.; minutes say the reconvene motion was at 7:18 p.m. Not a correction call; Patrick’s call if anything.
  • District name in the document is "Macon R-1 School District," not "Macon County R-I."
  • Redacted items numbered 1, 2, 11, and 13a plus closing portion; story does not speculate.
  • "EL Sped Para" in minutes rendered "EL special education paraprofessional"; EL not expanded (Sept. 16 minutes used EL for English learner, unconfirmed here).
  • "Nov. 18 next meeting" taken from our Oct. 21 story, not these minutes.
