Tigers open football season at Hallsville

Macon High opens its football season at 7 p.m. Friday at Hallsville.

The Tigers are 0-0. Hallsville is 0-0. The kickoff is the first regular-season game for both.

Macon County R-I is the only 11-man football program among the five Chariton Media towns. La Plata, Atlanta, and Bevier do not field football this fall. Callao C-8 is kindergarten through eighth grade and has no high school team.

Macon finished 6-5 last season in Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2. Hallsville won that meeting 19-14 on Sept. 19, 2025, according to the MSHSAA 2025-26 schedule.

Hallsville finished 4-7 last season and played in the Class 3 playoffs, according to MaxPreps. Osage beat Hallsville 63-19 on Nov. 7 in that tournament. KRCG reported last weekend that Hallsville won a district title in 2024 and that Friday is the Indians’ home opener.

Van Vanatta is listed as Macon’s head football coach on the high school athletics page. Paul Stevens is listed as Hallsville’s head coach on the MSHSAA 2026-27 coaching roster.

Both teams were at the Moberly football jamboree on Aug. 21. No verified score from that event has been posted.

Macon’s next two Fridays are at North Callaway on Sept. 4 and at South Shelby on Sept. 11, both at 7 p.m. Junior varsity and freshman games against Hallsville are Monday at Macon, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
