LA PLATA — The La Plata Nursing Home District will hold a public hearing on its property tax rates at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the activity room of the La Plata Nursing Home, 100 Old Stagecoach Road.
The district’s assessed valuation across Macon, Adair and Knox counties fell to $58,682,992 for 2026, down from $66,952,753 the year before. That is a drop of $8,269,761, or about 12.4 percent.
Real estate carried most of the decline, falling from $47,603,210 to $41,061,057, a drop of 13.7 percent. Personal property fell from $19,349,543 to $17,621,935, down 8.9 percent.
The notice lists the district’s current and proposed tax rate ceiling at 0.1395, unchanged from 2025. Rates in Missouri are expressed in cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
At that rate, the smaller tax base translates to less money. Applying 0.1395 to the 2026 valuation produces roughly $81,900, against roughly $93,400 in 2025, a difference of about $11,500. Because the proposed ceiling matches the current one, the district has no room to raise the rate to offset the loss.
For a homeowner, the district’s levy remains a small line on the tax bill. Residential property is assessed at 19 percent of market value in Missouri, so a home worth $100,000 carries about $26.50 a year for the nursing home district.
The size of the valuation drop is unusual for the year. Missouri counties conduct general reassessment in odd-numbered years, which means 2026 figures normally track close to 2025. The notice does not explain what caused the decline, and does not identify whether the change came from one county or all three.
The notice, signed by administrator April Hruska and posted Aug. 15, states that the rates will be set to produce the revenues required by the current assessed valuation, and that the proposed rates remain subject to change by the Missouri State Auditor’s Office.
State law requires a tax rate notice to be published in a qualified newspaper or posted in at least three public places at least seven days before the hearing, and to include the assessed valuations, the proposed rate and the amount of revenue that rate will produce. The district’s notice gives the valuations and a rate ceiling; it does not state a revenue figure.
Citizens may be heard on the proposed rates at the hearing.
