Anglers can leave their permits at home this weekend. Missouri’s annual Free Fishing Weekend runs Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7, and during those two days anyone can fish any public body of water in the state without a fishing permit, trout permit, or daily trout tag.
The Missouri Department of Conservation waives permit requirements statewide for the event, including the daily trout tags normally required at heavily visited trout parks such as Roaring River and Maramec Spring. It is one of the few times all year that fishing in Missouri costs nothing.
The free weekend does not mean the rules go away. All standard fishing regulations stay in full effect; anglers must still observe daily creel limits, size restrictions, and catch-and-release rules for their targeted species. Only the permit requirement is lifted.
A few waters carry their own rules. While state permits are waived, certain city, county, and private fishing lakes may still charge user fees or require their own municipal permits or daily tags. It is worth checking ahead before heading to a local lake.
For anyone who wants to try fishing but lacks the equipment, the Conservation Department operates Rod and Reel Loaner sites across the state where gear can be borrowed at no cost. Those planning a trip can also review the Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations to confirm daily limits and rules for the species they hope to catch.
Macon County anglers have a strong option close to home at Long Branch State Park, two miles west of Macon on Long Branch Lake. The lake holds bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish, with three boat ramps that carry no horsepower restrictions and an ADA-accessible fishing dock near the swimming beach. The campground is closed for 2026 renovations, but the lake remains open for fishing, boating, and day use all weekend.
